Edenton Selected as a Distinctive American Destination

Edenton has been called "The South's prettiest town."  The view across Edenton Bay and the Albemarle Sound from the foot of Broad Street, the lovely waterfront parks, the tree-lined streets flanked by fine 18th and 19th century  homes, the magnificent 1767 Chowan County Courthouse with its green running to the water, together yield an unsurpassed feeling of romance, charm and warmth.

The Cupola House can be visited on the Historic Edenton walking tourEstablished in 1712, and incorporated in 1722, it is located on Edenton Bay at the head of the Albemarle Sound. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Edenton was a political, cultural and commercial center in the colonies and in the fledgling nation. One of its citizens signed the Declaration of Independence, and another signed the United States Constitution. Edenton was home to two early North Carolina Governors, U.S. Senators, and an Associate Justice of the first U.S. Supreme Court.   But, Edenton is more than its long, important history. It is a prosperous and vibrant community unlike any you have ever visited. We welcome visitors to share in the beauty of the land and the water in a remarkable small Southern town.

Edenton Selected as a Distinctive American Destination

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has selected Edenton for its 2003 list of twelve Distinctive Destinations.  Selection criteria included commitment to preservation of historic landmarks, revitalization of downtown areas, and protection of unique heritage.  Trust President Richard Moe said, "Edenton represents a truly distinctive slice of America.  That makes it an exciting alternative to the homogenization of many other vacation spots.  It is my hope that more American cities and towns will follow Edenton's lead in preserving their own spirit of place."
